• Mindfulness in Education Workshops with Terry Hyland, Josephine Lynch & Helen Byrne

    Terry, Josephine and Helen are planning to hold a number of 1 day workshops for people working in education.  These workshops will start in Spring 2012.

    Terry Hyland Ph.D.  has taught at post-primary, further education and University levels.  He was appointed Professor in post-compulsory education and training at the University of Bolton in 2000 and retired from that post in 2009.  He is currently Director of Studies for Ph.D. educational research students at Bolton and also research student supervisor at The Irish Institute for Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies in Dun Laoghaire.   Terry has written many articles on education and 5 books, the most recent being “Mindfulness and Learning: Celebrating the Affective Dimension of Education”, published by Springer (see our “Mindfulness & Education” section under “Recommended Reading” for a brief introduction to this book and read sections of the book by following the Springer Link on our links page.)

    Josephine Lynch, Lic.Ac., T.C.M.C.I., has been studying and practicing in the area of mind / body medicine for many years.  She has been practicing meditation since she began her training in Chinese Medicine in the late ‘80s.  Josephine has been teaching mindfulness for 8 years at The Sanctuary, Stanhope Green, and also she teaches mindfulness on the graduate M.Sc. course at The Irish Institute of Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies.

    Josephine has completed her Master’s studies in Teaching Mindfulness-Based Courses to the level of a Postgraduate Diploma at the University of Wales, Bangor.  She has also gained the Certificate of Competence to Teach Mindfulness-Based Courses from the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice (Bangor University), at the end of 4 years of part-time Master’s level training.

    Helen Byrne, B.A., H.Dip.Ed., Dip.Psych., has a background in education, psychology, family therapy and the community and voluntary sector.   She has been teaching meditation and yoga  since 2004 and has been studying for a Masters degree in Mindfulness-Based Approaches in Social Care, Health and Education at the University of Wales in Bangor since 2007.  She has now reached the level of Post-Graduate Diploma in Mindfulness-Based Approaches. She hopes to complete her Masters thesis this year.

    In 2009 Helen trained with Dr.s Jon Kabat-Zinn (the founder of MBSR) and Saki Santorelli, Director of the Center for Mindfulness (CFM) at The University of Massachusetts Medical Center.   In September 2010 she successfully completed an Advanced  Teacher Development Intensive in MBSR with Senior Teachers at the CFM.   A post-primary teacher for many years, Helen  has worked with teachers and students in developing mindfulness in whole school communities and has also worked with teenagers and their parents and with teen parents.

    Terry, Josephine and Helen continue to develop their practice with regular attendance at retreats led by world-renowned teachers including Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, Sharon Salzberg, Christina Feldman and John Teasdale, among others. They participate in the Irish Plum Village Sangha’s events and retreats. Josephine is a founder member of the Sangha.
