About the Pre-Course Orientation

Once your deposit has been received, and prior to attending an 8-week course, the teacher will contact you to arrange an orientation phone or zoom call. The reason for this is to ensure you are informed about what to expect from participating in this course and to make sure this is a suitable time for you to attend this 8-week course. By the end of the conversation the teacher will decide whether or not it is the right time for you to proceed.  It is an intensive course and at times can be challenging, so it’s our ethical responsibility to set this time aside to discuss this with you.

If at the end of this call you or the teacher decide that you will not be going ahead your deposit will be refunded in full.

Information

Course Dates:

August 18th, 25th, September 1st, 8th, 22nd, 29th, October 13th, 20th

Please note there will be no Monday night sessions on September 15th or October 6th. There will be a Day of Compassion Practice on Saturday October 18th

This course is designed as a follow-on course for those who have already completed an 8-week MBSR, MBCT, MSC or similar mindfulness-based course. It allows participants an opportunity to deepen their mindfulness skills through focused compassion training that promotes a healthier and happier life and more fulfilling relationships. Designed for a general audience, it may also be of particular benefit for anyone who finds it hard to be kind themselves or who is living with a chronic pain condition, whether physical or emotional.

This MBCL course is a radical training in learning to be more compassionate towards ourselves and others. It explores the inner and outer science of compassion in an accessible way and introduces participants to a range of new practices that promote a sense of ‘heartfulness’ in relation to all of life’s experiences.

Key Features:

  • A welcoming and supportive learning environment
  • 8 two and a half hour sessions
  • A mostly silent Day of Mindfulness and Compassion Practice after completing six sessions of the training
  • The course is closely based on the material in Erik van den Brink and Frits Koster’s (designers of the course) published manual A Practical Guide to Mindfulness-Based Compassionate Living. Participants are encouraged to buy a copy of this in advance, but it is not essential to do so as learning materials including audio files will be provided
  • Participants are encouraged to spend between 20 to 45 minutes, doing Compassion-Based Home Practice each day to deepen skills development and support wellbeing

Dominic Cogan

Dominic has been involved in education as both a teacher, and teacher trainer in Ireland, Ghana, Japan, Oman and Nicaragua over many years. He began practising mindfulness in 2003. He has supported the wellbeing of both students and staff in schools through the Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP) suite of mindfulness courses known as Paws b, .b and .b Foundations. Dominic spent three years as a Board Member of the Mindfulness Teachers Association of Ireland (MTAI) and was responsible for setting up its Mindfulness in Education sub-committee.

Dominic teaches MBSR and MBCL (Mindfulness Based Compassionate Living) courses to the general public and organises mindfulness workshops in Dublin and the surrounding counties. In addition, he offers introductory courses in mindfulness to community groups, businesses and public sector organisations and offers one-to-one mindfulness training on request. Dominic has had a long association with The Sanctuary where he has devised and taught many courses and workshops related to mindfulness and wellbeing.

As well as teaching secular mindfulness and wellbeing programmes, he also has a particular interest in meditation as a spiritual practice and teaches courses and workshops that address the inter-spiritual dimensions across different contemplative traditions.

Dominic has worked as a Mindfulness Based Supervisor and Assessor for both the UCD Masters in Mindfulness Based Interventions and The Mindfulness Centre for Professional Training, Teacher Training Diploma Course. He is also worked on the Irish Teacher Trainer Panel for the Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP). Dominic provides supervision and mentoring to qualified and trainee MBSR teachers. In addition, he offers one-to-one spiritual guidance sessions within an inter-spiritual framework.

He continues to upgrade his professional training through attendance at workshops, retreats and conferences as well as maintaining a daily mindfulness practice. Dominic adheres to the Good Practice Guidelines set out by the Mindfulness Teachers Association of Ireland.
